Kuami Eugene is not a highlife

Kuami Eugene is not a highlife Ghanaian highlife guru K.K Kabobo says he does not see the 2020 VGMA Artiste of the Year, Kuami Eugene as a typical highlife musician.

According to him, Kofi Kinaaat stands tall amongst all the contemporary highlife artistes in the country. He made this known in an exclusive interview on YFM’s ‘Ryse N Shyne’ show which was hosted by Chelsy Sey.

’ Yes I know Kuame Eugene, but Kuame plays a different kind of highlife. When you listen to him, you automatically hear a highlife rhythm, but it is not a typical highlife.

‘’Every generation comes with its rhythm of highlife music, that is why you hear things like Borga highlife, Reggae highlife. Highlife is what you will call a multi-genre-genre’’ he said.

When K.K Kabobo was asked to give his list of current highlife artiste in Ghana he admires, he didn’t include the 2020 VGMA Highlife Artiste of the Year, Kuami Eugene in the list.

‘’I like Kofi Kinanta and it is not because he is from Takoradi, but because he is a great highlife musician. I also like Bisa K’dei too. Ofori Amponsah and Kofi Nti also do very good highlife’’ he stated.

In explaining why the highlife genere is not as viable as it used to be, K.K Kabobo said the trade has been infiltrated by individuals who are pursuing their selfish agendas and not conceend about the relevance of what they do.

‘’Highlife is going down because there are no producers. All the Executive Producers jump onto the genre that is trending. If gospel is trending they jump on to it. If you want to play authentic highlife, the producer will say no instead play it like this. That is why highlife is going down’’ he said.
